This 700 page monster of a book by Hugh Sebag-Montefiore is the stand out work on Operation Dynamo in my opinion.
Dynamo was the Allied attempt to extract 338’000 Allied soldiers from the coast of France, all while a German military juggernaut was closing in on them. To have this many Allied fighting men taken prisoner would have been a body blow to Great Britain and her Allies.
This book is a page turner and covers so many amazing, interesting facets of the Dunkirk evacuation, it also puts to bed some long standing myths and is a tome you can really learn a lot from.
It focuses on all levels of organisation from the very top where the politicians are involved in their own game of chess right down to personal stories and testimonies from the men on the ground… definitely all encompassing and absolutely riveting.
I couldnt put it down and despite being 700 pages long I absolutely charged through it and finished it in a ridiculously short time.
What is good about the book is that it doesnt just kick of with the rescue… it goes into great detail about events leading up to the rescue operation and brilliantly explains the situation sometimes in an hour by hour basis from all angles, political and on the ground amongst the fighting.
If you havent read this book yet and this period of history interests you please do yourself a favour and go and buy it as soon as you can.
Its nearly Christmas… go treat yourself.
