Hello fellow book lovers. I picked this book up from a charity shop in the Highlands of Scotland for less than £5.
A fantastic little book published in 1916 containing 12 short stories concerning life in the trenches during the First World War. One of the early pieces of work by H. C. McNeile of Bulldog Drummond fame.
Off course, as it was written and published during the war a pseudonym had to be used hence the authors name ‘Sapper’. Serving officers in the British Army were not permitted to publish under their own names.
The stories are easily digestable and are page turners in their own right. Some are humorous, some are sad but they are all entertaining.
It is great having stories penned by people who witnessed first hand some of the scenes described in the book and as McNeile had travelled to France in 1914 as part of the British Expeditionary Force serving with the Royal Engineers it can be assured he seen some awful sights.
